Champion for Student Health & Parent Engagement with Chris Powell

When Aileen Dinkjian saw the growing need to support student health, wellness, and parent engagement, she didn’t wait for change — she wrote for it. Her leadership and advocacy helped Thomas Jefferson Elementary School secure a $1,250 National Healthy Minds Grant, sponsored by the New York Life Foundation.

This competitive, nationwide grant program strengthens families’ ability to support their children’s mental health by providing resources, training, and community-based initiatives. Thomas Jefferson Elementary was one of only 50 schools selected across the country — a testament to its commitment to student well-being and a supportive school community.

“PTAs work hard every day to bring knowledge, tools, and resources into the lives of families in their communities to help connect them to their children’s school and support their health, safety, well-being, and success,” said Yvonne Johnson, President of the National PTA. “We are pleased to provide over $700,000 in funding to PTAs across the country to support their efforts in digital safety, healthy lifestyles, STEM, and the arts.”

With the Healthy Minds Grant, Thomas Jefferson Elementary launched programs that promoted mental health awareness, social-emotional learning, and resilience-building activities for students and families. These efforts aimed to create an environment that nurtures not only academic achievement but also emotional and mental well-being.

This initiative reflects Aileen’s proven track record in securing resources that directly benefit students and families. Through her experience in public health, education, and community leadership, Aileen continues to champion programs that bridge the gap between home and school — ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive, both in the classroom and beyond.
