Navigating Life After High School

What an honor to go back to my old high school and talk to students about life after Don Lugo in Chino and share how they can start their careers in healthcare and public health. I sat in these very same seats not knowing what the future would bring. So we did some goal-setting and discussed the many pathways that can lead to a meaningful career.

We also explored the wide range of opportunities in healthcare—clinical and non-clinical—and how early exposure can shape future leaders in our communities. I encouraged students to volunteer, shadow, and explore careers at San Antonio Regional Hospital, where we are committed to supporting the next generation through hands-on learning and meaningful mentorship.

It’s a privilege to play even a small role in helping young people discover what’s possible. Upon returning back to the office, I learned close to 40 students already signed up to join our Spring Young Healthcare Professionals program hosted by the Lewis-San Antonio Healthy Communities Institute. Can’t wait to see these students again!

My main message to the future generations is this: No matter where you’re headed—college, career, or the unknown—your journey is yours to write. Dream big, stay curious, and keep moving forward. Your next chapter is full of possibility. Please run toward it with everything you’ve got. I’m here to watch you grow, rise and conquer.
