Celebrating Juanita DeVaughn - One of the first black teachers at GUSD

It was such an honor to be with Juanita DeVaughn, educator and civil rights advocate, as friends and family celebrated her 100th birthday. If you didn’t know, Juanita was one of the first Black teachers at Glendale Unified School District, breaking racial barriers in education during a time of segregation and discrimination. She is a beloved community leader who marched with Martin Luther King Jr., championing equity, civil rights and voting rights. She cooked food for the repast for the 4 girls killed at the Birmingham church (1963), hosted the King family when they came to Altadena, worked tirelessly for the education of underrepresented students for decades. She deserved all the love that she received this past Saturday. She is one of my role models and is a living testament to the power of resilience, education and faith. Thank you for being my inspiration to serve our community and make sure every voice is heard and seen as we strive for excellence and justice. Happy birthday to this queen. hashtag#healthequity hashtag#equity hashtag#civilrights hashtag#education hashtag#community hashtag#service hashtag#resilience hashtag#birthday
